How to reset windows 2000 password if the password is lost, forgotten or unknown?

A new Windows 2000 installation, or a Windows 2000 upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98, may unexpectedly prompt you for a password. The following notification occurs when you log on to the Windows

2000-based computer:
Logon Message:

The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case. Make sure that Caps Lock is not accidentally on.
1. The Windows 2000 security model is based on the Microsoft Windows NT security model. This security model requires a user name and password before access to the computer is granted.

The Windows 2000 security model is different from the Windows 95/98 security model in that no authentication is required to obtain access to a computer running Windows 95/98. Users who upgrade from Windows 95/98 to Windows 2000 Professional may not be aware of these differences. If a user password is lost, forgotten, or unknown, the only method to reset the password is for the administrator (or a user with administrative access) to log on and reset the password in Computer Management. There is no method in the Windows 2000 security model to bypass, disable, or reset the password.

If a user account needs to be reset, logon as the administrator or as a user with administrative access, and then follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Programs, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
2. Expand the Local Users And Groups object under System Tools, and then click the Users folder.
3. In the right pane, right-click the appropriate user object, and then click Set Password.
4. Type the appropriate password, and then click OK.
5. Click OK to acknowledge that the password change succeeded.
6. Close the Computer Management console and Administrative Tools windows.
7. The user can log on with the new password.
If the administrator password is lost, forgotten, or unknown, access to the computer may not be obtainable and the operating system may need to be reinstalled. If the operating system is reinstalled, all previously installed programs and drivers will need to be reinstalled to operate successfully. Data files such as Microsoft Money files, Microsoft Outlook mailbox files, and so on, should not be affected by reinstalling the operating system, but these files will be lost if the hard disk is reformatted during the reinstallation of the operating system. But in fact there do be some software tools for you to use to remove the password and login without reinstalling the OS, like windows password reset, Windows Key and Active Password Changer, etc. All these are disk-based programs for you to burn the file onto disk firstly and then boot the computer from CD/DVD and remove the password instantly.

How to login Windows Vista without the password?

Forgot your Windows Vista password, can’t login the OS, worry about the data in the installation drive, all in all feel in crisis? Take it easy to follow the steps below to remove the password and enter Vista easily.
When you boot the computer and start Windows Vista, the OS will automatically run a component called “Easily Visit” on the user’s login interface. Replace the “Easily Visit” component by using the CMD.exe command prompt. And then you are able to enter the Vista.
Step1. Find your Windows Vista installation disk, insert it into the CD-drive, restart the computer and enter BIOS. On the Boot Device Priority, select CDROM Drives to boot the computer from CD drive by moving the highlighted cursor. When the boot tips appear on the screen, press any key to boot the computer from CD. Click “Next” in the Language Selection interface, in the installation interface, click “Fix the Computer”, and click “Command prompt” in the System Recovery Options.

Step2. After you boo the Command Prompt, enter the following commands one by one (Contents in the parentheses are annotations to the commands, no need to enter them. Provided Windows Vista is installed in C drive)

copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe d:\ (Assumed your Windows Vista is installed in C drive. This is to copy the command prompts to D drive)
del c:\window\system32\osk.exe (delete the screen-keyboard program in “Easily Visit” com component)
rename d:\cmd.exe osk.exe (Change the name of command prompts into the name of the screen-keyboard program)
copy d:\osk.exe c:\windows\system32 (Copy the renamed command prompts to the OS directory)
Tips: If the Vista installation disk is not available, you may alternatively boot the computer through DOS, load NTFSDPS (read only version), and enter “c:\windows\system32” to do the above operations.
Step3. Reboot the computer and output the disk. On the Login interface, click “Easily Visit” icon on the bottom left corner, click “Confirm”, then you boot the computer with command prompt.

Tips: If there is no “Easily Visit” icon, then follow the tips to enter a password as you like. When the OS tells the password is incorrect, click “Shift User”, in this window, you can active the “Easily Visit”.
Step4. Right now you boot the computer with the command prompt as the administrator, which is the system account of the OS. It has all the privileges. Now, we can enter Vista via it. Let’s see what we can do after we enter the system.
Case1. Setup a user extract file
When people forgot the login password, the most they care is how to protect or extract the personal files from the OS drive. Well, do as follows: Enter “net user CFAN 123456 /add” in the command prompt, and then you set up a user account named “CFAN” with the password is “123456”. Enter the Vista with this account to extract any file you need. Do keep it in mind that this account must be deleted next time.
Tips: You can also enter “net user” to display the current users, and then enter “net user CFAN 123456 /add” to change the CFAN user’s password into 123456 by force (CFAN is an existing user account with password forgotten).

Case2. Reset user passwords
Enter “mmc.exe” under Command Prompt to boot the Boot Console, and then click “File>Add/Delete Management Unit”. In the list select “Local Users and Group”, click “Add”. Go back to the Boot Console, and click “Console Pitch Line Point>Local User Group>User”, and then select the account that password is forgotten in the right window, right click “Set Password”, and follow the instructions will be OK. After all these are done, go back to the login interface and use this new password to login the Vista.

Warning: Changing account passwords will cause you unable to open the EFS encrypted files. Please make sure all the passwords of the encrypted files have been stored before you change the password.

Tips: You can also enter “explorer.exe” under command prompt to login the OS. Though there is no desktop but you can use the “Start”, via “Start” you can see that the login account is the SYSTEM, via which you can run any program, like you can run the antivirus software to scan the computer, then the viruses can be erased before they have change to harm the computer.

Well, the above method seems a little complicated to people who are not familiar with computer command prompt and seems scary to them. If this method is not suitable for you, the better way is to use software programs. Such password recovery software programs are a lot but similar, let me take Windows Password Reset 6.0 for example to instruct how to remove Windows Vista password with software programs.
Download the program from windows password reset and you will get a *.exe file, double click it to open and you will find there are four files in: resetwindowspassword.iso, BurnCDCC burner, purchase webpage icon, and a HELP CHM file. Please do not try to open the resetwindowspassword.iso image file.

Forget Windows Password?

Forgetting your Windows administrator login password. With no way to get into the system, you can’t even perform basic maintenance, let alone a thorough tune-up. Formatting is always an option, but we consider that a last resort. (Plus, guess who’s going to have to help reinstall all the programs lost after a wipe?) But all hope is not lost. There are a few ways to actually retrieve a lost Windows account password. Read on, and we’ll show you the light.

====1st Method====

The first thing which you check if you forget login password. When we install Windows, it automatically creates an account “Administrator” and sets its password to blank. So if you have forget your user account password then try this:

Start system and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press ctrl+alt+del keys twice and it’ll show Classic Login box. Now type “Administrator” (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.

Now you can reset your account password from “Control Panel -> User Accounts”.
Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

====2nd Method====

1. Reboot your machine.

2. Press F8 before the Windows boot screen appears.

o Do not press F5 as used on the NT/9x series of Windows.

3. You will be be prompted with a boot options menu.

4. Select the Start Windows in Safe Mode option.

5. Click through several self-explanatory screens until your reach the familiar 'Welcome' screen.

6. Note that this welcome screen is limited to 256 colors and 640x480 resolution because the primary graphics will have been set to the Windows Safe Mode software VGA adapter. You will not be able to change this mode even in Display options, while Windows is running in Safe Mode.

7. Find the icon for the Administrator user. If the default settings of your system haven't been changed, there should be no password for this account.

o The Safe Mode Welcome screen might display some of the other users on your system.

8. Login as the admin.

9. Press Yes at the prompt asking if you would like to continue using Safe Mode.

10. Continue on to the User Settings control panel. Here you can change any of the other passwords for user on the machine. Make any changes you want.

11. Reboot your computer. As long as you don't press any keys (i.e. F8) during the boot-up the computer will startup normally.

12. Login as the user for which you set the password.

====3rd Method====

Windows XP and further versions also provide another method to recover forgotten password by using “Reset Disk”. If you created a Password Reset Disk in past, you can use that disk to reset the password. To know more about it, please visit following links:
